چکیده

Nowadays, multimedia streaming is a common service on the Internet including both fixed and mobile networks. The RTP protocol is usually used to transfer the media. The RTCP protocol is an accompanying protocol for the RTP and it is used for feedback transmission in order to control multimedia session behaviour. The issue is the bandwidth dedicated for the RTCP protocol. As defined in the RTP specification, it is limited to 5 % of the total allowed bandwidth. This is a limiting factor for large-scale media streaming services based on Source-Specific Multicast (SSM) since the RTCP bandwidth is shared among all the receivers. It causes large delays in sending feedback data from each receiver. For the purpose of solving this issue, a hierarchical structure of receivers with summarisation nodes has been proposed. The paper introduces an optimization of this hierarchical structure in order to achieve the lowest feedback transmission intervals. The proposal is supported by a simulation in Matlab environment. Furthermore, the paper deals with a design of a new protocol called Tree Transmission Protocol (TTP) that was proposed to organize session nodes into a hierarchical tree structure.

An Extensible RTCP Control Framework for Large Multimedia Distributions

The Real-time Transport Control Protocol (RTCP) is a crucial mechanism used, amongst other things, for synchronisation and feedback control in multimedia sessions. However as groups grow to large numbers, it faces two serious challenges: the growing deployment of unidirectional and asymmetric broadcast architectures, such as Source-Specific Multicast and satellite networks, eliminate the shared...

Scalability Issues with the Hierarchical Feedback Aggregation for Large-Scale IPTV Systems

Hierarchical feedback aggregation is an enhancement to the RTP/RTCP (Real Time Protocol/Real Time Control Protocol) when the SSM (Source-Specific Multicast) is employed. The main purpose of feedback transmission is to provide information about media delivery and information needed for RTP/RTCP session management. This paper deals with a tree structure for hierarchical feedback aggregation speci...

RTP Control Protocol (RTCP) Extension for a Third-Party Loss Report

In a large RTP session using the RTP Control Protocol (RTCP) feedback mechanism defined in RFC 4585, a feedback target may experience transient overload if some event causes a large number of receivers to send feedback at once. This overload is usually avoided by ensuring that feedback reports are forwarded to all receivers, allowing them to avoid sending duplicate feedback reports. However, th...

Transmitting Hierarchical Aggregation Information Using RTCP Protocol

The current state of the RFC 3550 RTP/RTCP standard is not optimal for large-scale streaming sessions employing sourcespecific multicast and is currently the subject of research in many research laboratories. The most promising optimization for the RTP/RTCP protocol seems to be hierarchical aggregation [2], [3], [5], [6], [10], [11]. However, hierarchical aggregation has not yet completely solv...

Network Working Group Extended Rtp Profile for Real-time Transport Control Protocol (rtcp)-based Feedback (rtp/avpf)

Real-time media streams that use RTP are, to some degree, resilient against packet losses. Receivers may use the base mechanisms of the Real-time Transport Control Protocol (RTCP) to report packet reception statistics and thus allow a sender to adapt its transmission behavior in the mid-term. This is the sole means for feedback and feedback-based error repair (besides a few codecspecific mechan...
